How to Play Battletoads
Quick start
Press START for a solo attempt. For Western two-player play, the second player presses START on their own controller at the join prompt. Begin in Ragnarok’s Canyon by practising A jumps, B attacks and a double-tap run into a charging blow. Pick up a defeated Walker’s leg when available, and leave room between partners. In the descent and vehicle stages, learn the new movement pattern before committing to a long run.
Controls
D-pad moves your toad; movement depends on the stage. A jumps, B attacks or performs the nearby pick-up/throw action. Double-tap left or right to run, then B for a charging smash. START begins or pauses play. During vehicle sections use the directions and A jumps to negotiate obstacles; these sections are not ordinary walking fights.
Battletoads — About this game
The iam8bit Legacy Cartridge Collection edition republishes Rare’s first Battletoads adventure on an NES cartridge. Its restored fold-out package and coloured cartridge are physical presentation features; the game still centres on fighting, precision jumps and vehicle obstacles. Rash and Zitz set out to rescue Pimple and Princess Angelica from the Dark Queen. The opening brawls introduce oversized finishing blows and improvised weapons, but punching is only one part of the adventure. A cable descent, fast vehicle runs, dangerous water and moving snake platforms each demand a different approach. Double-tapping a direction produces a run, useful for powerful charging attacks, while flies can restore energy. A full health bar cannot protect against every pit or lethal obstacle, so memorising a route and watching the landing matter as much as beating enemies. Two people may play together, but their attacks can hurt each other and certain failures pull both back to a checkpoint. The Japanese and Western cartridges adjust hazards and entry flow differently; follow the instructions for the selected edition.
