How to Play Akumajou Dracula
Quick start
On this Japanese cartridge, choose NORMAL or EASY with SELECT at the title before pressing START. Break the opening candles, collect whip upgrades and test the reach of a standing strike before approaching the first enemies. Save some hearts for the sub-weapon you pick up. After losing all lives, choose CONTINUE and confirm with START to retry the section.
Controls
D-pad: walk, crouch and use stairs. A: jump; hold left or right when taking off to jump sideways. B: whip. Up+B: use the equipped sub-weapon if you have enough hearts. START: start, confirm, pause or resume. SELECT: choose CONTINUE or END after a game over. At the title, SELECT chooses NORMAL/EASY.
Akumajou Dracula — About this game
The action and equipment-loss advice below describes NORMAL mode. The castle is an ordered series of hazards rather than a maze to explore freely. Simon must clear eighteen stages grouped into six sections, with a monster guarding the end of each section before the confrontation with Dracula. His whip can be strengthened and lengthened, while a dagger, arcing axe, returning cross or holy water offers a different way to reach an enemy. These secondary weapons draw on the heart counter; collecting hearts does not restore the separate health bar. Food and the crystal earned after a boss serve that purpose. Watch the available landing space before jumping, and give the whip enough time to connect before a fast enemy closes in. Stairs and narrow platforms make a careless hit particularly costly. A failed attempt removes equipment, so learning where useful candles stand is part of rebuilding a route. CONTINUE starts the current section again; END returns to the title. The Japanese 1993 Famicom cartridge adds NORMAL/EASY selection and does not use the disk edition’s name registration or saved files. EASY reduces incoming damage, removes the backward knockback from a hit and lets Simon retain his sub-weapon after a miss.
