How to Play Contra
Quick start
Use SELECT on the title screen to choose 1 PLAYER or 2 PLAYERS, then press START. In the jungle, try B to fire and A to jump before crossing the first gaps. Shoot the flying capsule and collect its item when the path is safe. At the first fortification, destroy its red sensor to enter the base.
Controls
D-pad: move and aim; Up aims upward in side-view areas, Down lies prone. A: jump; Down+A drops through suitable platforms. B: fire. In the rear-view bases, Left/Right move sideways, Down lies prone and Up advances after the wall targets and electrical barrier are cleared; A still jumps and B fires. SELECT: choose player count or CONTINUE/END; START: begin, confirm or pause/resume.
Contra — About this game
Progress depends on reading the next threat while keeping a clear line of fire. The NES campaign crosses eight zones, from the jungle and a climbing waterfall to enemy installations and the alien stronghold. Side-view running and jumping give way to base interiors viewed from behind: destroy the wall targets, wait for the electrical barrier to disappear, then move deeper inside. Shooting capsules releases lettered power-ups, including the wide Spread Gun, continuous Machine Gun and piercing Laser. Contact, bullets and falls cost lives, so a better weapon helps only if you can protect it. Two people can fight together on the same screen. Cover different firing angles and watch your partner’s position before pushing the screen onward.
