How to Play Crystalis
Quick start
Press START at the title, choose START for a new journey and enter a name. Leave the opening cave for Leaf. Visit the elder in the northwest house for the Sword of Wind and the northeast house for starting money. Equip the sword and any purchased armour through SELECT before heading north. Practise charging B near town and save before exploring the caves.
Controls
D-Pad moves and selects. B attacks with the equipped sword; hold to charge and release to fire. A casts selected magic and selects equipment in the sub-screen. SELECT opens/closes equipment and items; Up/Down changes its pages. START on the field shows status, and START from the sub-screen opens the save/load system. Selected event items are used with B in the appropriate context.
Crystalis — About this game
This entry contains the English NES game included in SNK 40th Anniversary Collection. The journey still begins outside Leaf, and progress depends on conversations, elemental swords and preparation. The collection’s rewind, state saves and configurable controller layout belong to its surrounding software; the NES buttons and internal save procedure described here remain a separate system.
Awakened without his memories, the hero leaves a cave for villages living under the growing threat of Draygon. Crystalis combines overhead exploration with real-time fighting: move around enemies, charge a sword and release an elemental shot instead of waiting for a battle menu. Experience increases the hero’s level, while towns provide clues, defensive gear and recovery.
The four elemental swords are also exploration tools. Their stronger attacks require the appropriate orbs and bracelets, and different powers clear different obstacles. If an enemy takes no damage, check the weapon’s element and your level rather than repeatedly firing the same shot. The sages’ magic adds healing, communication and other ways to solve problems. Equipment is chosen from the SELECT screen; its system page provides two save slots where the game allows saving. Continuing after defeat is distinct from loading a recorded game after power-off.
