How to Play Donkey Kong Jr.
Quick start
Choose 1 PLAYER GAME A with SELECT, then press START. On the first screen, climb with both hands when two vines are available. Watch the snapping enemies and change to a single vine when you need to descend quickly.
Controls
Left/Right: walk or change vines; Up/Down: climb or slide. A: jump, combined with a direction for a sideways leap. B: unused. SELECT: choose players and A/B difficulty at the title. START: begin, pause or resume. Two vines favour climbing; one favours descending.
Donkey Kong Jr. — About this game
Junior’s rescue depends on the way he grips the vines. Holding two at once makes the upward climb faster, while a single grip is better for sliding down out of trouble. The four-stage circuit introduces snapping enemies, birds, springboard jumps and electrical hazards before the final chain-and-key puzzle. Touching hanging fruit drops it onto enemies below, opening a safer route and adding points. In the first three stages, reach the key at the top; in the fourth, push the keys into their locks to release Donkey Kong from Mario’s cage. BONUS keeps counting down, so a safe route must also be reasonably quick. Game A and the harder Game B both offer one-player play or alternating turns for two.
