How to Play Donkey Kong (GameCube)

Quick start

Press SELECT until 1 PLAYER GAME A is highlighted, then START. Move right along the first girder, jump approaching barrels with A and climb a clear ladder. Watch the bonus timer rather than waiting indefinitely for a perfect opening.

Controls

Left/Right: walk. Up/Down: climb or descend ladders. A: jump; combine with Left/Right to leap sideways. B: unused. SELECT: title options. START: begin, pause or resume. A held hammer swings automatically; jumping and ladder climbing are unavailable until it disappears. At the title, Up/Down can also move the selection.

Donkey Kong (GameCube) — About this game

Mario must work his way to Pauline through three repeating construction-site stages. The opening climb mixes ladders with rolling barrels, while the next screen adds moving lifts and bouncing springs. The final layout changes the objective: cross every bolt to remove the supports beneath Donkey Kong. Staying alive takes more than jumping at the last moment, since a long fall or an empty bonus timer also costs a life. A hammer temporarily clears barrels and enemies, but prevents jumping and climbing while held. Pauline’s dropped belongings offer extra points if the detour is safe. Game A provides the gentler starting difficulty; Game B raises the challenge. Two players take separate turns rather than sharing the screen. This GameCube edition preserves the NES game’s stages and scoring rules.
