Double Dragon III (Beta · The Rosetta Stone) — About this game
This English prototype opens with Tradewest branding and the subtitle The Rosetta Stone. Its story follows the stones and Cleopatra’s treasure; the later Acclaim release rewrote the premise around rescuing Marion. The original script also uses Aldo where the retail script names Brett, and lacks the famous Bimmy misspelling. Research finds the playable content otherwise the same as the released English version, so the party, modes and original buttons described here apply to this build.
The NES adventure begins with Billy in one-player mode, then adds Chin after China and Ranzou after Japan. These allies change how a fight can be approached: Chin brings powerful strikes, while the ninja uses a sword and aerial techniques. Five missions take the party from the United States through China, Japan and Italy to Egypt.
Every character has one life. An empty energy gauge removes that fighter, leaving surviving allies to take over. Open the SELECT screen before losing someone to choose another fighter or equip a limited-use special weapon. There is no arcade-style shop for buying party members. Two people can fight together, with Mode A preventing partner damage and Mode B allowing it. In the opening dojo, practice the simultaneous-button jump and approach enemies along a different vertical line. Later platforms and gaps demand care, because losing one fighter can sharply reduce the party’s remaining chances.
