How to Play Dragon Warrior
Quick start
Choose Begin a New Quest with A, enter a name and choose message speed. Read the king’s opening instructions, collect the three throne-room chests and use the key to leave. Visit the town east of the castle, buy equipment, then fight slimes nearby and return to the inn before HP runs low. In this US edition, visit the king at Tantegel Castle to record progress in an Adventure Log; three logs can be kept.
Controls
D-pad: walk and choose commands. A: open the command window, confirm and advance text. B: cancel. Select Talk, Take, Door or Stairs when the situation requires that action.
Dragon Warrior — About this game
Every expedition begins with a practical choice: spend gold on stronger equipment or keep enough for healing and an inn. You travel alone, so a single monster can turn an apparently safe journey into a retreat. Experience improves the hero and unlocks spells, but limited MP still makes herbs and careful routes useful. Town conversations reveal places and hidden objects rather than marking a complete route for you. Dark caves call for a torch or light spell, while command-based doors, chests and stairs make observation part of exploration. Defeat returns the hero to the king at the cost of half the gold, so short journeys near a town are a sensible way to build strength.
