How to Play Final Fantasy II
Quick start
Press A during the opening text, choose New Game and name the four characters with the D-Pad and A. The opening defeat leads into the story at Altair. Talk to Hilda and remember the Wild Rose keyword, then ask her about it; inspect the party’s equipment and supplies before leaving. Save on the world map and follow the rebels’ clues toward Fynn without challenging the occupying soldiers.
Controls
D-Pad moves and selects. A talks, searches and confirms; B cancels. START opens the main menu during exploration. SELECT opens formation: choose a character and press A to switch front/back, then B to leave. Use the conversation commands to remember keywords, ask about them or present an item. Battle commands and targets use D-Pad and A.
Final Fantasy II — About this game
This Wii and Wii U Virtual Console edition uses the Japanese NES/Famicom adventure. Its party systems, menus and dungeon planning follow the original game. The saving instructions below describe the game’s own recording system; suspension and backup options supplied by a Virtual Console host are separate features.
The survivors of an imperial attack find shelter with the rebels, then take on missions that carry them from occupied towns to distant fortresses. Conversations have a practical role: remember a highlighted keyword, ask someone else about it, or present an important item to uncover the next lead. Firion, Maria and Guy form the continuing core of the party, with other companions joining during the story.
There is no ordinary character-level experience ladder. Weapons, spells and attributes develop through what the characters do, allowing equipment and repeated practice to shape their roles. Front and back rows affect which physical attacks can reach, while magic can still threaten protected members. Prepare the items each hero can use in battle, watch HP and MP, and save from the menu on the world map. This is the Japanese Famicom second game, with a different story and system from the Super NES title sold as Final Fantasy II.
