How to Play Final Fantasy III

Quick start

Press START after the introduction and choose New Game. Name all four heroes with the D-Pad and A. In the opening cave, collect the chests, equip the shields and examine the suspicious rock with A to open the path. Use the healing spring before facing the turtle near the crystal. Speak to the crystal, leave for Ur and equip the new jobs before the next expedition.

Controls

D-Pad moves and selects; A confirms, talks and examines. B cancels, talks to an accompanying guest or opens contextual item use during exploration. START opens the main menu. SELECT cycles the character leading on the field. Battle commands depend on the current job and are selected with D-Pad and A.

Final Fantasy III — About this game

This 3DS Virtual Console edition uses the Japanese NES/Famicom adventure. Its party systems, menus and dungeon planning follow the original game. The saving instructions below describe the game’s own recording system; suspension and backup options supplied by a Virtual Console host are separate features.

Four young adventurers fall into a cave and encounter the Wind Crystal. Their escape opens a journey in which choosing a job is a continuing decision, rather than only a setup choice. Crystals unlock new professions with different equipment and battle commands; changing jobs spends the party’s capacity points, so preparation includes deciding which roles to practice and what gear to carry.

Exploration asks more of the party than winning ordinary fights. Some routes depend on transformation magic, special abilities or the right vehicle, while airships eventually reveal how much lies beyond the first area. The original Famicom version begins with all four heroes together, not the separate introductions of the 3D remake. Review equipment after changing jobs, retain healing magic and record progress from the world-map menu before entering a long dungeon. The game has three save slots; later remake quicksave and bonus systems are not part of this cartridge’s rules.
