How to Play Final Fantasy

Quick start

Press A or B to reach the title menu, select やりなおし and confirm with A. Choose a class and a four-character name for each of the four heroes, using spaces for shorter names. Enter Cornelia, buy weapons, armour and usable magic, then equip the purchases from the START menu. Speak to the king, practice nearby battles and rest at the inn before going northwest to Garland’s temple.

Controls

D-Pad: move the party and menu cursor. A: talk, search and confirm a selection. B: cancel or return to the previous screen. START: open the main/status menu while exploring. SELECT: rearrange marching order. In combat, use the cursor and A to choose each hero’s command and target; B backs up before the round is committed.

Final Fantasy — About this game

This Wii and Wii U Virtual Console edition uses the Japanese NES/Famicom adventure. Its party systems, menus and dungeon planning follow the original game. The saving instructions below describe the game’s own recording system; suspension and backup options supplied by a Virtual Console host are separate features.

The first challenge is deciding who will travel together. Six starting classes offer different combinations of weapon access, protection and magic, and the four heroes you create stay with you through the adventure. Their first rescue mission opens a bridge into a wider world of ports, caves and distant towns. New vehicles and key items gradually turn previously unreachable places into the next destination.

Battles resolve the commands you select for the whole party. In the original NES rules, an attack aimed at an enemy already defeated does not automatically move to another target, so spreading orders matters. Magic has separate use counts for each spell level instead of one shared MP pool. Buying spells and equipping weapons before a dungeon, then deciding when to return, is central to progress. Resting at an inn or using appropriate camping items records the journey; there is no ordinary save-anywhere command in the field menu.
