How to Play Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
Quick start
At the title press START or A, choose さいしょから and confirm with A. Select きろく1 or きろく2 with the D-Pad and A. On the first map select a blue ally with A, choose a destination and then こうげき to attack or たいき to wait. Protect weaker allies behind the front line; after clearing the castle approach, move Marth onto it and choose しろ.
Controls
D-Pad: cursor and menu choices. A: select a unit, destination or command; on an empty tile it opens the progress menu. B: cancel. SELECT opens the progress menu or relevant unit information. Choose ターンおわる to hand play to the enemy; use ちゅうだん for an in-battle break. START also confirms the later unit-selection preparation screen.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light — About this game
Marth’s campaign begins with pirates threatening the island where he has taken refuge and grows into a struggle to reclaim his homeland. Each chapter presents a grid battlefield where the allied and enemy armies take turns. Cavalry, armoured soldiers, archers and healers have different jobs; terrain changes movement and the chance of being hit. A safe formation has to account for the enemy turn, not merely the damage dealt by the next attack. Capturing the castle or throne with Marth wins the map, rather than requiring every enemy to be defeated.
Companions gain experience and develop individually, while losses can deprive the army of characters for later chapters. Most weapons, tomes and staves have limited uses, so shops, villages and the four-item personal inventory matter alongside combat. Some opponents can join through the right conversation. The original cartridge provides chapter-clear records and a separate ちゅうだん interruption command during battle. This is the Japanese Famicom edition: its menus remain Japanese, and the additional conveniences of the later official English Switch release are not its own features.
