How to Play Gradius II
Quick start
Choose 1 PLAYER or 2 PLAYERS on the title screen with SELECT, then START. Pick one of four weapon patterns using up/down or SELECT and confirm with A, B or START. In the opening space waves, use B to fire and collect red capsules. When SPEED UP is highlighted, press A to buy it; then build toward missiles and Options while leaving room for the first solar hazards.
Controls
D-pad moves the Vic Viper in eight directions. B fires the equipped gun and missiles; A activates the highlighted power-meter upgrade. SELECT chooses the player mode and cycles the equipment selection before play; up/down also choose equipment. A, B or START confirms equipment. START starts or pauses/resumes. At game over, SELECT chooses CONTINUE or END and START confirms.
Gradius II — About this game
The power meter makes every capsule a decision: spend it on speed now, save for a stronger weapon, or work toward another Option that follows your flight path. Before taking off you choose one of four equipment patterns, which determine the missiles, double shot and laser available during the run. Up to four Options can multiply the attack, and selecting that upgrade again temporarily sends them circling the ship. The Famicom campaign reshapes the arcade journey into seven stages, moving from solar flames through biological passages and Moai defenses to a boss rush and the final stronghold. Losing a life removes your equipment and returns you to a checkpoint, making recovery part of the challenge. Two-player mode alternates after a lost life rather than placing both ships on screen.
