How to Play Gyruss
Quick start
Press START at the opening, use SELECT to choose CONTROL A or CONTROL B, then START again. CONTROL A moves toward the screen direction you press; CONTROL B rotates continuously with left/right. During the first approach to Neptune, fire the regular gun with A and watch where enemy formations turn toward the rim. Keep B’s limited phaser for a dangerous opening or a boss.
Controls
CONTROL A uses all eight directional inputs to move toward that part of the ring. CONTROL B uses left/right to rotate; up/down are unused. A fires the regular cannon; B fires the Ultra-Lazonic Phaser when a charge is available. SELECT chooses the control style before play; START begins or pauses/resumes.
Gyruss — About this game
Gyruss bends the fixed shooter into a ring. Your ship travels around the screen’s perimeter while its guns point inward at approaching formations. Clearing waves advances the journey from Neptune toward the Sun, with bosses blocking planetary arrivals and Chance Stages providing a break focused on score and supplies. The NES version expands the trip to 39 stages and adds a limited phaser alongside the regular gun. Bonus spheres can improve the standard shot or replenish the special weapon, whose reserve holds up to seven shots. Movement is a choice of two styles: direct the ship toward a side of the screen, or hold left and right to keep circling. Learning when to reverse course, when to hold a firing position and when to spend a phaser is central to surviving the route.
