Climbing sections test your landing choices, while other routes extend sideways and fortresses turn progress into a search through connected rooms. Hearts dropped by enemies buy supplies; they are a separate resource from health, so collecting one does not simply heal a wound. Shops, training rooms and hot springs provide different ways to prepare for the next stretch. Mallets can release the petrified warriors inside fortresses, and a map with a pencil helps record explored rooms. An empty health meter or a fall beyond the screen ends the attempt. The NES cartridge uses a password to resume at a reached checkpoint with recorded equipment and progress. In the final aerial battle, releasing the attack button lets the shield defend Pit.
