How to Play Mega Man (Virtual Console)

Quick start

Press START, move the cursor to one of the six robots, then press START again. Cut Man or Bomb Man offers a useful first route to practise jumping and firing. Watch the next landing before leaping; revisit Elec Man’s stage for the Magnet Beam once you can reach it.

Controls

Control Pad: move left/right, climb ladders with up/down and move menu cursors. A: jump or release a ladder. B: fire the equipped weapon. START: begin, confirm a stage, or open/close weapon selection. SELECT: pause/resume without opening that menu.

Mega Man (Virtual Console) — About this game

This is the Virtual Console reissue’s NES game member. The directions below start at the game’s own title screen and use its original buttons. Host menus and restore points are separate features.

Six portraits form the first decision: which robot can you beat with the basic arm cannon, and which earned weapon will make the next encounter easier? Each stage tests a different skill, from lifts above pits to disappearing blocks and ladders under enemy fire. Defeating its boss adds a weapon with a separate energy supply, so an apparent dead end or difficult fight may be easier after visiting another stage.

The Magnet Beam hidden in Elec Man’s stage builds temporary footholds and matters beyond collecting another attack. Check that you have it before the fortress. This first game has neither the later slide and charged shot nor a password system. Continuing after defeat keeps the current run moving, but switching the original game off does not preserve a cleared-boss record. Learn a route and spend special ammunition where it changes the odds.
