How to Play Metroid
Quick start
Use SELECT to choose START, then press START. Go left from the opening position to collect the Morph Ball, return and try the low passage. Shoot blue doors and note the first junctions. At game over, write down the password; next time choose CONTINUE and enter it to resume.
Controls
D-pad left/right: move. Up: aim upward; Down: Morph Ball after collecting it. A: jump. B: shoot, or set a bomb in ball form after collecting bombs. SELECT: switch beam/missiles when available, or select a title option. START: confirm or pause/resume. Password screen: D-pad selects characters, A enters, B moves back, START confirms.
Metroid — About this game
A new ability is also a new way to read the planet. The Morph Ball takes Samus through narrow gaps, bombs expose certain barriers, and stronger jumps bring high exits within reach. Metroid links rooms and lifts into a continuous search, so returning to familiar terrain with different equipment is part of making progress. There is no in-game map: mark junctions, lifts and unopened doors rather than relying only on the similar-looking corridors. Blue doors open to a beam shot, while red ones require five missiles; missiles therefore matter for travel as well as combat. Extra energy tanks and missile capacity make longer expeditions more manageable. Defeating Kraid and Ridley opens the route to Mother Brain, but finding equipment prepares you for that journey. This NES cartridge uses passwords instead of the Japanese disk version's save files. Record the displayed code carefully at game over and choose CONTINUE on the title menu when returning.
