Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom (Wii Virtual Console) — About this game
This is the Virtual Console reissue’s NES game member. The directions below start at the game’s own title screen and use its original buttons. Host menus and restore points are separate features.
Ryu’s investigation of Irene’s apparent murder takes him through seven acts of enemies, machinery and unstable footing. He can climb a wall and step onto its top, or grab the underside of certain pipes and move along them. While hanging, only ninja arts can be used to attack, so choosing the upper or lower route changes how a fight begins.
The sword upgrade extends ordinary attack range, while the previous game’s phantom copies are gone. Orb contents can be seen before collection, helping you avoid replacing a useful special art by mistake. Those arts still spend ninja power and complement normal sword strikes rather than removing the need to judge a landing. Moving platforms and slippery surfaces make the jump’s longer airtime worth learning. In the opening laboratory, practice pulling onto a ledge and moving around a pipe before pressing deeper into the traps.
This North American edition allows only five continues and has no password system. Enemy damage, item placement and restart points are harsher than in the Japanese edition, so do not plan around its more forgiving retry rules.
