How to Play Super Mario Bros. 2
Quick start
Press START at the title, highlight a character with Left/Right and confirm with A. Mario is a straightforward first choice. In the opening area, stand on grass and press B to pull an item, then press B again to throw it. Aim to reach the crystal ball and open the next gate.
Controls
Left/Right: walk; hold B with a direction to run. A: jump; as the Princess, keep A held to hover briefly. B: uproot, lift or throw; stand on an enemy or mushroom block before lifting it. Up: enter doors or climb; Down: crouch or climb down. Hold Down until flashing, then A: charged high jump. START: start or pause.
Super Mario Bros. 2 — About this game
Picking up an enemy changes the rhythm of a Mario adventure: landing on its head usually gives you something to carry, rather than defeating it. Pull vegetables from the ground, lift mushroom blocks and throw what you find to clear a path. Character choice matters across the seven worlds. Mario is balanced, Luigi reaches high platforms, Toad handles heavy lifting quickly and the Princess can hover briefly over a difficult landing. Holding an object also affects movement, so the best jumper is not always the best choice for a busy area. Potions reveal temporary doors to a shadowy space with coins or helpful mushrooms. Boss encounters and crystal balls stand between you and later areas, while a health meter allows some mistakes before a life is lost.
