How to Play Super Mario Bros. 3
Quick start
Choose 1 PLAYER GAME with SELECT and press START. Move to the first numbered panel on the map and press A to enter. Practice holding B to run and A to jump. After finding a Super Leaf, use a clear stretch to fill P with a run-up, then tap A repeatedly to fly.
Controls
D-pad: move, climb, enter doors with Up, crouch or slide down slopes with Down. A: jump/swim. Hold B: run or carry a stopped shell; release B to throw it. B also fires or swings the tail with the appropriate power. As Raccoon/Tanooki Mario, fill P by running, then tap A to fly; Down+B turns Tanooki Mario into a statue. Map: A enters/uses an item, B opens items. SELECT: player count; START: start/pause.
Super Mario Bros. 3 — About this game
The map makes progress a choice between courses, fortresses, roaming opponents and helpful stops. Clearing a stage opens the route onward, while Toad’s houses and bonus games can supply items to keep for a later challenge. Inside a course, running, jumping and carrying shells are joined by powers that change how you explore. Raccoon Mario needs a run-up to fill the P meter before taking flight; the Frog Suit helps in water and the Tanooki Suit offers a temporary statue form. Reach the flashing goal panel and collect its card before time runs out. Across eight themed worlds, small stages lead toward airships and bosses. Two-player play alternates the main adventure between Mario and Luigi, with a separate battle available when they meet on the map.
