How to Play Super Mario Bros.
Quick start
On the title screen, press SELECT to choose 1 PLAYER GAME or 2 PLAYER GAME, then START. Begin in World 1-1: use A to jump over or onto the first Goomba, hit a question block from below, and try a B-assisted running jump before the first gap. Aim for the flagpole.
Controls
D-pad Left/Right: move; Up/Down: climb vines. Down: enter an accessible pipe or crouch as Super/Fire Mario. A: jump, or stroke upward while swimming. B: run; Fire Mario also throws fireballs. SELECT: choose the player count at the title screen. START: begin or pause.
Super Mario Bros. — About this game
The flagpole gives most stages a clear destination, but reaching it means choosing where to accelerate, when to jump and which blocks are worth investigating. A running jump carries Mario farther than a standing one, while the length of the button press helps shape his leap. That makes even a short stretch of pipes, gaps and approaching enemies a small problem in timing.
Question blocks can supply coins or power-ups. A mushroom lets Mario grow, and a Fire Flower gives him a ranged attack; neither makes a fall into a pit safe. Underground passages and swimming sections change the rhythm before the castles at the end of each world. Coins and hidden bonuses reward exploration, although the countdown keeps every detour under pressure. In the two-player mode, Mario and Luigi take separate turns through the adventure, each with their own progress and lives.
