How to Play Tombs & Treasure

Quick start

At the title press START, select New Game with up/down and A. Enter the boy’s and girl’s names with the D-Pad and A; the right arrow changes name slots and Exit finishes. In the lab, read the secretary’s explanation and the notebook, then TAKE the Sword, Lighter and Silver Key from the desk. GO backwards to meet Jose and forward to leave. Visit the Nunnery early to obtain the Ixmol Jewel. For a password, select LOOK, press B while its frame is red, choose the jewel and press A; later choose Password Continue and enter the same names and code.

Controls

D-Pad chooses icons, items and targets; A confirms or advances text, B cancels. With LOOK active, B opens the inventory and a further B leaves it. On the map the D-Pad walks in eight directions. CHANGE followed by A cycles the boy, girl and Jose. USE equips the Sword; FIGHT and A strike. GO chooses a direction inside ruins and can retreat from a fight. JOIN selects two inventory objects in sequence. START and SELECT are not ordinary pause/menu controls during exploration.

Tombs & Treasure — About this game

Professor Imes has vanished during an expedition to the Mayan ruins. His daughter, a young companion and the guide Jose follow the clues he left behind. Travel uses an overhead map, but entering a ruin changes to a first-person scene with icon commands. Looking at a wall or object may reveal more than its appearance suggests; taking, pushing, washing and joining items can unlock the next stage of the search. Choosing the active party member matters because their talents differ.

Battles introduce levels, health and equipment, but progress primarily comes from solving the ruins’ problems. Select the Sword with USE before fighting, and examine a monster when you need a clue about its strength. A difficult encounter may indicate unfinished work elsewhere rather than a need to repeat random battles. Some item arrangements can leave the expedition unable to advance, so keep track of changes and avoid altering objects without a reason. The Ixmol Jewel from the Nunnery displays a password when examined. Record both character names with it; the immediate Last Game Continue option after defeat serves a different purpose from resuming a later session.
