How to Play Totally Rad

Quick start

Press START to skip the opening screens if desired, then START at the title to begin. On the first amusement-park track, practice A jumps and B shots. To try a power, press START, move the cursor with the directional pad and confirm with A, then hold up and press B to cast. Save some magic for healing.

Controls

Left/right moves, down ducks, A jumps and B fires; hold A for a higher jump and B for a stronger shot. START opens the magic menu, directions move the cursor and A selects. B or START leaves it without changing the selection. Up+B uses the selected power. SELECT pauses and resumes.

Totally Rad — About this game

Jake can shoot and jump without spending magic, but the decisions begin when his twelve-option magic menu opens. Healing, freezing enemies, protection, elemental attacks and transformations all draw on the same reserve. A lion jumps higher and cannot be hurt during its jump; an eagle flies and a fish swims. Returning to Jake costs nothing, letting him prepare another spell before paying to transform again. Keeping magic for healing can be as valuable as using it to clear a difficult screen. Five levels, each split into smaller stages, carry the route from amusement-park tracks and a circus through streets, sewers and forests toward an underground stronghold. Large bosses block the way, while the enemy counter rewards fighting with extra lives. Basic shots become stronger when B is held, and holding A adjusts jump height. The American edition stars Jake, Allison and Zebediah Pong with rewritten dialogue and character art; it is distinct from the Japanese Magic John presentation.
