How to Play Willow
Quick start
Begin a new adventure from the title. At Nelwyn, visit Willow’s family for recovery, speak to High Aldwyn in the neighbouring house for the magic acorn, and find Vohnkar in the northwestern house for the Long Sword. Open START and equip the sword and magic before heading north. Practise B while still for a swing and direction+B for a thrust against nearby enemies.
Controls
D-Pad moves and selects menu entries. B uses the equipped sword: while stationary it swings, with a direction it thrusts. A uses the selected magic device and spends MP; A or B advances dialogue. START opens/closes equipment: choose sword, shield, magic or item, enter with A and select what to ready. On the password screen D-Pad selects characters, A enters them, B backs up and START confirms the completed password.
Willow — About this game
The Nelwyn farmer Willow is chosen to challenge Bavmorda’s rule and help the transformed sorceress Fin Raziel. This overhead action RPG builds its own journey around familiar film characters. Villagers provide equipment, recovery and clues, while paths through forests and caves lead to enemies and blocked routes that open through quests. You directly control sword fighting: a stationary strike swings the blade, while attacking with a direction produces a thrust. The difference gives approaching enemies and crowded passages a practical combat rhythm.
Experience improves Willow’s abilities, but equipment choice still matters. Swords vary in usefulness against particular foes, shields protect against suitable attacks and magic devices consume a separate MP reserve. New gear and spells must be selected in the START menu before use. Returning to helpful villagers restores resources and makes a risky expedition easier to plan. Progress is continued through passwords rather than a cartridge save-file menu. After defeat, record the offered password carefully; it represents a restart state and may omit unfinished work in the current expedition. Keeping track of cave exits and recent quest items helps prevent unnecessary retracing.
