How to Play North & South

Quick start

Press START, then configure the sides with the pointer and A. For solo play, change the opposing side’s flag to a computer display: the default has two human players. Choose the year and optional events, then point to GO and press A. On the map, select a flashing army with A, choose an adjacent flashing state and confirm with A. Protect railway connections while learning the battle controls.

Controls

D-pad: pointer or unit movement. A: select, inspect armies or attack. In battle, B switches cannon/cavalry/infantry; hold A with cannon and release to fire at a distance set by the charge. In fort/train action, A throws a knife or punches when empty, while B jumps. START: begin; pause during battle, fort or train scenes. SELECT is unused.

North & South — About this game

North & South combines a turn-based campaign map with real-time battles set during the American Civil War. Choose the Union or Confederacy and try to eliminate the opposing armies rather than merely paint the map your colour. Connected railway towns provide income for reinforcements, so supply routes matter as much as winning a skirmish. When armies meet, you switch among three troop types; capturing a town or robbing a train instead puts a single soldier through a timed platforming challenge. One- and two-player settings let you match planning and reflexes against the computer or another commander. This entry covers the European edition.
