How to Play Parodius (PAL Prototype)

Quick start

At the title, use SELECT for one or two players and START to confirm. Choose a character with the D-pad and A, then select Auto or Manual power-up and confirm with A. Choose Easy, Normal or Hard and press A again. Auto and Easy let a newcomer focus on movement and firing with B. In Manual, collect capsules until the desired power-meter entry lights up, then press A. Do not chase a bell through incoming fire just to change its colour.

Controls

D-pad: move and choose character, power-up method or difficulty. A: confirm setup choices; activate the lit upgrade in Manual mode. A is unused during Auto gameplay. B: fire shots, missiles and bell special attacks. START: confirm at the title, pause/resume and confirm Continue. SELECT: choose one or two players at the title. Two-player mode alternates turns, using Controller I for player one and Controller II for player two.

Parodius (PAL Prototype) — About this game

Parodius brings an unlikely flying party through pirate waters, an amusement park and other strange battlefields. Each of the four characters has a different weapon set, so choosing a pilot also changes the equipment you can build. Capsules move a highlight along the power meter: in Manual mode you decide when to spend it, while Auto handles upgrades for you. Bells add another decision, changing colour when shot and offering score bonuses, extra lives, special attacks or temporary invincible growth. The playful enemies do not remove the need to dodge bullets and negotiate confined spaces. This NES adaptation has seven main stages and an alternating two-player mode. Easy allows unlimited continues; Normal allows nine and Hard three, making the difficulty choice matter beyond the shooting itself.
