The search for the Inner Sanctum begins with a party of adventurers and a world that must be explored carefully rather than followed along a single obvious road. Towns offer information and supplies, while the surrounding land hides monsters, traps and routes to unfamiliar locations. Movement uses a first-person view, making orientation and notes valuable when passages begin to resemble one another. Battles rely on commands and the complementary abilities of the party’s members. Physical attacks, spells and restorative resources all have their place, but spending them carelessly can leave the group unable to return safely. The central pleasure is gradually understanding Varn: a clue gained in one settlement can explain an obstacle encountered much earlier.
