How to Play Popeye

Quick start

Press SELECT to bring up the game selection, then move the asterisk to 1 PLAYER GAME A and press START. Walk left or right and use up or down at stairs and ladders to reach Olive’s falling hearts. Keep away from Brutus; use A against thrown bottles rather than trying to beat him with ordinary punches. Punch the spinach can when you need a temporary advantage, and do not let a collectible sink into the water.

Controls

D-pad left/right: walk. Up/down: climb stairs and ladders. A: punch projectiles, the bird, the punching bag or the spinach can. B: not used. SELECT on controller one: choose a one- or two-player Game A/B at the title. START on controller one: begin, pause or resume. The second player uses controller two in a two-player game.

Popeye — About this game

Popeye turns a pursuit into a collecting challenge. Olive drops different objects in each of three scenes, and you must gather the required set while Brutus, the Sea Hag and a troublesome bird interfere. The paths run across several levels, so choosing a staircase matters as much as reacting quickly. A punch can break incoming bottles or skulls, but ordinary strength will not settle a meeting with Brutus. Punch the spinach can to gain a short burst of power, knock your pursuer out and collect objects for double points. The hanging punching bag and bucket offer another scoring opportunity. Objects caught higher up are worth more, yet leaving a falling item unattended can cost a life. Game A provides an easier introduction and Game B raises the challenge; completing scenes brings increasingly aggressive attacks and another chance to improve your score.
