How to Play Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box
Quick start
Start New Game and enter a name. During the office tutorial, examine the desk’s middle drawer for Layton’s keys, then use the shoe icon to move right. Follow the map puzzle and the clues leading to Dr. Schrader’s flat. Tap scenery for hint coins before leaving. Save through the trunk between puzzles; you cannot save in the middle of an answer attempt.
Controls
Tap people to talk and scenery to investigate. Tap the shoe, then an arrow or entrance marker to travel. Puzzle instructions specify whether to select, drag, draw or write an answer; submit when prompted. Hint coins pay for help. Open the trunk to Save, review the Journal or revisit solved puzzles in the Puzzle Index. A advances dialogue, D-pad up/down scrolls the Puzzle Index, and START skips a playing movie.

A letter from Dr. Schrader draws Layton and Luke into the mystery of the Elysian Box, an artefact said to kill whoever opens it. A train ticket leads them onto the Molentary Express and toward places where residents and everyday objects conceal puzzles. Investigation alternates between examining scenes, gathering testimony and solving problems of logic, numbers or spatial reasoning. Hidden hint coins offer assistance, while the trunk keeps the journal and solved puzzles within reach. Tea blending, a hamster exercise course and a peculiar camera add smaller challenges alongside the central mystery.
