Press START and choose New Game. After Susie explains the shipwreck, explore the first overhead island area and talk to every character; the opening route has you find Chuckie and Donnie, collect 20 gooshy-balls, then clear the monkeys and the gorilla blocking the path. Pick up quest items before entering a mini-game, since returning fish, boots, keys and other requested objects opens the next route. In side-scrolling encounters, keep enough gooshy-balls for the boss; in driving stages, finish the stated collection or chase goal before the final timed escape. Record the password shown after progress so you can resume later.

D-pad moves through the overhead island, steers vehicles and navigates menus. A is the primary action: confirm, talk or pick up on the map and jump where the side-scrolling stage calls for it. B is the secondary action and throws collected gooshy-balls during animal encounters. START pauses or opens the current status menu. Special stages use on-screen prompts for their context-sensitive action, including steering races and repeating the submarine control-panel pattern; the island overview map allows travel to places already explored.
