How to Play Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon
Quick start
Start as Kyle in Cherry Blossom Square, speak with Mana and follow her and Douglas east to the farm. Buy the offered hoe and watering can, follow Mana's crop lesson and plant the seeds she provides. Meet the townspeople, then accept Mana's first delivery request from the board. Speak to her at the shop after 9:00, take the Emery Flower to Rosalind and report back to Mana. The academy and child protagonist come later.
Controls
Default DS controls: D-pad moves; R toggles run/walk. A talks, picks up and gives items; B uses the active tool/weapon or eats held food. Y stores a held item, otherwise uses rune ability slot 1; X uses slot 2. START opens the menu; SELECT toggles the target square. L+A chooses items, L+B tools/weapons and L+X/Y rune abilities. Touch an empty part of the field to move; touch controls also handle menus. Settings can swap controls.

Rune Factory 2 starts with Kyle arriving in Alvarna without his memories. Mana and Douglas introduce him to farmland, and daily life grows around crops, requests, friendships and real-time trips into monster territory. Its defining change comes later: marriage and a child lead to a second generation, with the child taking over the farm and attending the new academy. School lessons and expanded facilities open crafting opportunities that are not available to Kyle at the beginning. The first part therefore focuses on settling into the community and preparing a future for the family, while the next broadens the adventure. The DS sequel also expands touch control and provides two rune-ability slots, giving it a different control layout from the first game.
