How to Play Commando

Quick start

On the title screen, use SELECT to highlight a one-player game and press START. Once Super Joe lands, use the Control Pad to weave away from enemy fire and B to shoot. Save A-button grenades for enemies behind cover and collect the flashing ammunition boxes along the route. Advance toward the top of the battlefield, keeping an eye out for hidden shelter entrances and prisoners. START pauses the action if you need a break.

Controls

Control Pad: move in eight directions. B: fire the rifle. A: throw a grenade from your limited supply. SELECT: change the highlighted title-screen game option; it has no normal function during play. START: begin the selected game or pause and resume the action. These controls are documented in both the English NES booklet and the Japanese Famicom booklet for this edition.

Commando — About this game

Commando puts Super Joe on foot against an enemy army, with eight-direction movement and two very different weapons. Rifle fire clears approaching soldiers, while a limited stock of grenades gives you a way to hit enemies protected by barricades. Keeping moving is essential, but rushing past every supply box can leave you short of grenades when a protected commander blocks your route. The NES and Famicom conversion also makes rescuing prisoners part of the action: hidden ladders lead to underground shelters containing hostages or useful bonuses, although some shelters hold hazards instead. Watch the battlefield for opportunities to explore without losing track of incoming fire. This listing runs the Japanese Famicom edition, Senjou no Ookami; the English title and guidance help explain the game, rather than indicating an English-language ROM.
