How to Play Shanghai

Quick start

Press START on the title. Look for two tiles with the same pattern, with no other tiles on top and either left or right empty. Use the four-way controller to align with the first one and press A, then press A on the second one, and when both colors are reversed, press A again to remove it. To reselect, press B according to the flipped tile. You can choose how to play from NEW GAME at the bottom of the screen. First, learn how to identify free tiles with SOLITAIRE, which has no time limit.

Controls

Cross key: Move the finger cursor up/down/left/right/diagonally. A: Select a tile or menu and remove the selected pair. B: Cancel the selected tile. START: Start from the title. Do not use SELECT. For the menu at the bottom of the screen, move the cursor and press A. You can return to the previous arrangement by pressing HELP BACK UP, and try the same arrangement again by pressing RETRY. If you use PEEK to look down, you will not be able to continue the game.

Shanghai — About this game

The Famicom version of ``Shanghai'' is a puzzle where you stack 144 mahjong tiles in a dragon shape and search for pairs that can be removed. You can only choose ``free tiles'' that have no tiles on top of them and are open on either the left or right side. The basic rule is to erase two of the same pattern, but there are special combinations between spring/summer/autumn/winter tiles and between flower tiles. The height is indicated by the color of the tiles, so pay attention not only to the visible patterns but also to the overlap. Includes solitaire with no time limit, tournament to see the most eliminations within the time limit, and challenges for two players to take turns. The key to winning the game is not only to immediately erase the easy-to-take pairs, but also to think about the order in which you will release the lower tiles.
