How to Play Silent Service

Quick start

At Mission Options, use Up or Down and A to choose Torpedo/Gun Practice. Start with the beginner Midshipman skill and simple combat settings. SELECT opens the Conning Tower, where the simulation pauses; point to a station and press A to enter it. In the periscope or binocular station, place a cargo ship under the crosshairs, select Target ID to inspect it and use the torpedo-control icon to fire. Use the throttle and guidance icons to practice movement. Return to the Conning Tower when you need time to choose a different station.

Controls

Controller 1 Control Pad moves the pointer; A activates the indicated control or option. SELECT opens the paused Conning Tower station-selection screen. Speed, rudder, diving, periscope position and weapons are controlled through their on-screen icons, not by treating the pad as direct steering everywhere. On the War Patrol map, move the arrow with the pad and press A when a red border indicates a convoy encounter. Controller 2 Left/Right rotates the periscope; Up/Down adjusts deck-gun deflection. Holding B and pressing A on controller 2 blows emergency tanks once per engagement. These second-controller inputs need their own mapping in an emulator.

Silent Service — About this game

Silent Service puts you in charge of an American submarine in the Pacific rather than giving you a simple shoot button and an endless supply of targets. You move between charts, instruments, periscope views and damage reports, using on-screen controls to set speed, turn, dive and attack. Fuel, battery charge and a limited torpedo supply all affect how long you can stay in action. The mission options range from practice against anchored cargo ships to individual convoy engagements and a full war patrol with a return to base. Skill and combat settings let you add complications such as unreliable torpedoes or more capable escorts. Successful attacks depend on target position and movement, but surviving the destroyers afterward matters just as much. Learn the stations before attempting a long patrol, and remember that some advanced functions are assigned to the second controller even when one person commands the submarine.
