How to Play Fire 'n Ice

Quick start

Press START at the title, choose a new adventure, then select a world with A. Use Left/Right to choose a round on the smaller map and press A again; B cancels world selection. In the opening puzzles, practise creating ice with A or B and pushing a loose block into a flame. Check that you can still climb back out before removing a supporting block. SELECT rewinds ordinary puzzles; hold it to rewind faster. Boss rooms cannot be rewound. Use the rest option to retain cleared-round progress.

Controls

Left/Right: move, push loose ice and climb a single-block step. Up/Down: enter suitably oriented pipes, not jump. A or B during a puzzle: create/remove ice diagonally below and ahead of Dana. A confirms world/round selection; B cancels a world choice. START begins the game or opens the puzzle's menu. SELECT: rewind; hold for faster rewind. The START menu also offers rewind, restart and return to the map; bosses cannot be rewound.

Fire 'n Ice — About this game

A novice Dana is chosen to save Coolmint Island from the flames unleashed by Druidle. The solution to each room is not a race to a key: you must put out the flames and defeat the enemies present by arranging ice. Either action button creates a block diagonally below Dana in the direction he faces, or removes ice already there. Loose blocks slide when pushed and fall when they reach an edge, consuming themselves when they extinguish a flame. Newly created ice can attach to an object beside it, allowing you to build temporary bridges or stairs. Dana cannot jump and can climb only a one-block step, so the route you leave for yourself is part of every solution. Pipes complicate later rooms by moving him between openings, and bosses become available after their world's ordinary rounds are cleared. The Japanese version includes built-in rewind and saves cleared rounds using the rest option, rather than the western MagicWord system.
