Choose New Game and follow the opening story: the first playable character is Green Goblin, not Spider-Man. The short Goblin's Rampage introduction teaches movement and attacks, then your first objective is to destroy four parked cars. Move with the Control Pad, jump with A, use B for close punches and object interaction, cycle the three fireball types with L, and throw the selected fireball with R. Fireballs are safer for cars or guards at mid-range; save punches for enemies already beside you. Later missions alternate to Spider-Man, whose first priorities are rescuing civilians and reaching each marked exit. Between missions, spend upgrades on the moves you actually use—Goblin's fire attacks or Spider-Man's web abilities—rather than spreading points across both move sets at once.

Both characters: Control Pad moves, A jumps, B punches or interacts with nearby objects, and START pauses. Green Goblin: L cycles among his three fireball types, R throws the selected fireball, and jumping repeatedly while clinging to a wall gains height. Spider-Man: press A again in the air to web-swing, L fires webbing, Up+B performs the web-hammer attack, and pressing towards a wall lets him crawl; R performs his secondary kick. The game alternates characters by mission rather than offering a mid-level character switch.
