Press START at the title screen, begin a new journey, and choose Little Creek or Little Brook. After Spirit's storm story, you enter the base/taming area. Pick up the waterskin immediately to the left, fill it at the lake to the right, then gather some food and hearts before approaching a horse. Use SELECT to check that horse's taming difficulty and needs; choose an easier horse such as Rain for the first trip. Stand beside it, use the available care actions to feed, water, talk, sing, or pet it, and fill the blue happiness meter before pressing L to mount. Follow the arrows into the Forest. Your first trail objective is to keep the horse healthy, find five branches for the beaver by the river, cross its repaired bridge, collect the flute near the tree beyond the bear, and ride off-screen to return the horse to Homeland. Save food: supplies in the base do not regenerate, and you cannot collect items while mounted.

Control Pad moves Little Creek/Little Brook or steers the horse. A performs the contextual action and jumps while riding. B shakes trees and bushes for fruit on foot; while mounted it performs a forward attack, and at water it can let the horse drink. R cycles/selects an available care action and performs the horse's back kick while riding. L mounts or dismounts once the horse trusts you. SELECT cycles status screens for the horse and taming difficulty, food/water and available actions, and special items. START opens a pause menu with Restart Level, Quit Level, and Quit Game. Dismount to collect food, water, special items, shake plants, or care for the horse.
