Press START at the title screen, select New Game with the Control Pad and A, and complete the opening tutorial before exploring the first Bikini Bottom hub. SpongeBob and Patrick begin as a two-character team: collect the Atlantis Amulet fragments needed to advance, use L whenever the partner is better suited to an obstacle, and use R for the pair's combo move. Before the Magic Bus departs, Squidward's music game asks you to press the displayed A, B, or Control Pad input in time. Collect Melody Shells instead of rushing past them; a full EXP gauge restores Rainbow Power and raises its maximum. Later, press Up at Character Change doors to choose a different two-character team after Mr. Krabs and Sandy join. Copy each password when it appears so you can resume from the Password option.

Menus: Control Pad moves the cursor, A confirms, and B cancels or goes back. Stages: Control Pad moves left or right; hold Up or Down to look in that direction. Press Up at a Character Change door to enter it. A jumps and advances text. Down plus A drops through a thin platform. B attacks, cancels, goes back, or advances text. L switches control to the partner character. R performs the current pair's Combo Move. START pauses; during a tutorial it ends the lesson, and during a cutscene it skips ahead. Mini-games can use prompted inputs, so follow the buttons shown on screen.
