How to Play Defender II
Quick start
At the title screen, use SELECT to choose the player count and Game A or B, then press START. Learn in Game A: fly with the D-pad and use A for the unlimited laser. When a Lander lifts a resident, destroy the alien early, then touch the falling person with your ship to rescue them. B spends a smart bomb and clears the visible enemies, so save it for a crowded screen rather than routine targets. Flying through the sparkling gate takes you to the other side of the planet. Clear the required aliens to advance the wave, and avoid delaying long enough for more pursuers to arrive.
Controls
D-pad: move the Defender up, down, left or right and reverse its travel direction. A: fire the unlimited laser beam. B: spend one limited smart bomb to destroy the enemies on the current screen. SELECT: at the title screen, cycle the one- or two-player choices and Game A/B. START: begin the selected game; during play, pause and resume. Two-player mode alternates turns after a lost ship. These are NES controller functions, not emulator keyboard bindings.
Defender II — About this game
Star Gate, released in North America as Defender II, is a fast bidirectional scrolling shooter about protecting the residents of planet Ligaras. Landers descend to abduct people and transform into more dangerous mutants, so the pilot must shoot the captor, catch the falling resident and return the fight to the remaining attackers. The laser has unlimited ammunition, while a smart bomb removes the enemies currently on screen and must be conserved. A glowing gate moves the Defender to the other side of the planet, letting you respond to trouble without crossing the whole landscape. Waves grow busier, and enemies appear to punish slow clearing, so survival depends on reading the scanner, reversing direction cleanly and deciding when a bomb is worth spending. Game A begins more gently; Game B starts at a higher intensity.
