How to Play Star Wars

Quick start

Press START to begin the opening, then press it again if you want to skip directly to play. On Tatooine, steer the landspeeder with the D-pad and hold B to accelerate; visit caves before leaving for Mos Eisley, prioritizing R2-D2, Obi-Wan, Falcon shields and useful weapons. On foot, hold B while moving to run, then press and hold A for a longer jump. Use SELECT when grounded to open the party screen and switch heroes or equipment. Save Falcon shields for the asteroid field, use R2-D2 for the Death Star map, and expect the final flight sections to use their own controls.

Controls

Star Wars — About this game

This 1991 Beam Software and JVC adaptation follows the broad course of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Luke begins by driving across a non-linear Tatooine, entering caves to find R2-D2, Obi-Wan, better equipment and shields for the Millennium Falcon. Side-scrolling stages let you run, jump, climb and fight as Luke, Han or Leia after they join the party, while the Select screen changes the active hero, weapon or support character. Later sections replace platforming with asteroid dodging, turret fire, X-wing flight and the Death Star trench attack. Optional objectives affect the completion score and can make later hazards easier, so rushing straight to Mos Eisley is possible but risky.
