How to Play Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Quick start
Press START to skip the introduction and begin on Hoth. Use A to jump and B to shoot. Hold Down for a few seconds to charge a higher jump before pressing A. Search the ice caves for the lightsaber and Force icons; SELECT changes weapons on foot once the saber is found. To equip a collected power, press START, move the highlight with the Control Pad and confirm with A or B. START again cancels the choice.
Controls
On foot: Left/Right moves; Up/Down climbs ladders or vines; Down crouches and charges a larger jump. A jumps. B attacks; the Control Pad adjusts blaster aim or saber direction. SELECT changes blaster/saber; while mounted, use B + SELECT to change weapons. A mounts a tauntaun or available AT-ST, and SELECT dismounts; leaving the AT-ST destroys it. START begins/pauses and opens Force selection: choose with the pad, confirm with A/B, or cancel with START. Snowspeeder: pad maneuvers, A speeds up, B fires, SELECT launches a limited tow cable. X-wing: pad maneuvers, A speeds up and B fires. Force powers are unavailable in vehicle sections.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back — About this game
Luke's journey combines platform exploration with vehicle battles. You begin on Hoth riding a tauntaun, but the caves reward searching on foot for a lightsaber and useful Force icons rather than simply racing toward the exit. A charged jump reaches places beyond an ordinary leap, while blaster aiming and directional saber strikes offer different ways to fight. The action later shifts to the snowspeeder defense of the Rebel evacuation, Dagobah's dangerous terrain and the approach to Cloud City. Force abilities add movement, defense and weapon enhancements, but they require both discovered powers and enough energy. Planning a route through hazards and keeping those resources available matters as much as shooting.
