How to Play Bandit Kings of Ancient China
Quick start
Press START after the opening, choose Begin a New Game with A, and select a scenario. Scenario 1 starts every Good Fellow in exile and teaches the full progression: recruit compatible heroes, settle an open prefecture, then establish an economy and army. Hunt for food or fur, use Service and Give to improve the prefecture and public support, and hire, train and arm soldiers before provoking a stronger neighbor. Keep building Popularity toward 250 so the Imperial Edict eventually permits the final attack on Gao Qiu. Do not spend every month on development: the game ends in 1127. Save through the Other command and remember that the cartridge keeps only one saved campaign.
Controls
Use the D-pad to move cursors and highlight commands, people or prefectures; press A to select. B cancels before a subcommand is chosen, changes pages in longer hero lists, and finishes a multiple-hero selection. When entering a number, use Left/Right to choose a digit column, Up/Down to change its value, and A to confirm. On the battle map, point with the D-pad and press A to deploy, move or attack in that direction. START advances from the opening to the New Game/Load Game menu. The verified NES manual assigns no function to SELECT, so none is claimed here.
Bandit Kings of Ancient China — About this game
Bandit Kings of Ancient China is Koei’s strategy adaptation of the Chinese classic Water Margin. Choose one of four historical scenarios and a Good Fellow, then build a rebel cause through recruitment, settlement, administration, diplomacy and war. Once you control a prefecture, monthly commands let you develop its land and wealth, feed its citizens, hire and train troops, make weapons, trade and manage the loyalty of your heroes. Battles move as many as ten units across a hex map affected by terrain, rivers, seasons, weather and provisions. Your larger objective is to raise Popularity to 250, receive the Imperial Edict and gain the authority to attack Gao Qiu’s home prefecture. The campaign must be completed before the northern invasion in January 1127, so efficient expansion matters as much as winning individual battles.
