Press START at the title screen and begin on Io, Wave 1; SELECT at the title screen instead opens the password/options route. Fly along the two-way scrolling surface, destroy the current alien wave and intercept any scientist being carried away. Touch a falling or grounded survivor to pick them up, then return them to the Dropzone landing pad beside the colony. Protect all ten where possible—keeping at least one person alive prevents the moon's volcano stabiliser from failing—and collect weapon power-ups before the planet guardian. Each moon has ten action levels followed by its guardian.

Use the Control Pad to fly left, right, up and down and to set the direction of fire. A fires the pulse-laser cannon; START pauses and resumes play, while SELECT at the title screen opens the password/options route. The HUD shows the selected special weapon, smart bombs and remaining cloak. Use the on-screen/manual prompt for cloak, smart bomb and special-weapon selection: the online GBA scan confirms these systems, but its publicly indexed text does not expose a reliable button-by-button mapping for B, L and R, so those assignments are deliberately not guessed.
