How to Play Super Mario 64 DS

Quick start

Select Adventure and an empty file to begin as Yoshi. Walk to the castle door, then follow Lakitu’s advice and the lower-screen map to find the rabbit carrying its key. Chase it while holding Y and press A nearby to catch it with Yoshi’s tongue. Take the key back to the door, enter the castle and jump into an accessible painting. Read the mission clue and search for a Power Star.

Controls

STANDARD MODE: D-pad walks; hold Y while moving to run. B jumps or swims; A talks, reads signs or attacks, with Yoshi using his tongue. R crouches, or performs a ground pound when airborne. L centres the camera; X changes camera distance; lower-screen arrows rotate it. START pauses; SELECT opens control-mode selection. Touch and Dual-Hand modes use different mappings.

Super Mario 64 DS — About this game

Super Mario 64 DS turns Peach's castle into a gateway to varied three-dimensional courses. Yoshi begins the search for the missing Mario, Luigi and Wario, and rescuing them adds characters with different strengths to the adventure. Paintings lead to places where a mission clue, a hidden route or an encounter can reveal a Power Star. Collecting stars opens more doors in the castle, while keys unlock particular passages. Character caps let you borrow another hero's abilities, so returning with a different skill can reveal a new solution. Coins restore health, and the lower-screen map helps track your position. The DS version also includes touch-controlled minigames, offering a change of pace from exploring and platforming.
