How to Play Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt

Quick start

At the cartridge menu, press SELECT until Mario or the duck marks the game you want, then press START. For Super Mario Bros., begin with 1 PLAYER, hold Right to advance, tap or hold A for different jump heights, and hold B to run across wider gaps; a Fire Flower also lets B throw fireballs. Reach the flag before time expires and use mushrooms and coins to preserve lives. For Duck Hunt, first make sure your emulator or hardware provides compatible Zapper input. Start with Game A, aim at each flying duck and pull the trigger; you have three shots per duck and must reach the pass line after ten ducks. Game B launches two ducks, while Game C replaces them with two clay targets.

Controls

At the combo menu, SELECT switches between Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt; START opens the chosen game. In Super Mario Bros., Left/Right moves, Down crouches when powered up and enters suitable pipes, A jumps or swims, and holding A lengthens a jump. Hold B while moving to run; as Fiery Mario, B throws fireballs. START begins or pauses, and SELECT chooses one- or two-player play. In Duck Hunt, SELECT moves the mode arrow and START begins or pauses; the Zapper trigger selects/shoots targets. Game A optionally lets a second player steer the duck in both axes with the controller D-pad; its A and B buttons are unused.

Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt — About this game

Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt combines two defining Nintendo games behind a shared selection screen. Super Mario Bros. sends Mario, or Mario and Luigi in alternating two-player play, through eight worlds of scrolling stages to rescue Princess Toadstool from the Koopa king. Running, variable-height jumps, hidden blocks, pipes, mushrooms, fire flowers, coins and strict time limits shape its platforming. Duck Hunt instead requires Zapper-compatible pointing input and offers three score-attack modes: one duck at a time, two ducks at once, or pairs of clay pigeons. Each target group allows only three shots, and every ten-target round has a pass line that must be met to continue. In Duck Hunt Game A, a second player can use the controller D-pad to steer the duck while the first player shoots.
