How to Play Super Mario Bros. 2

Quick start

Begin with START, move Left or Right on the character screen, and press A to select. Take a moment to try A for a jump and B while standing on grass to pull up an item. A second B press throws the carried object. Landing on a suitable enemy lets you pick it up in the same way. Use Up when standing in front of a door. To reach a higher platform, crouch with Down until flashing, then press A. START pauses when you need a break.

Controls

Use Left/Right to travel, Up for doors and climbing, and Down to crouch or climb down. A is jump and character confirmation. B picks up or throws; with Left/Right it also lets you move faster. A charged jump comes from crouching until the character flashes, then pressing A. Peach can hover briefly by keeping A held during a jump. START starts, pauses and resumes. Button names refer to the original Famicom/NES controller.

Super Mario Bros. 2 — About this game

This Famicom edition carries the title Super Mario USA; North American players may recognize its adventure as Super Mario Bros. 2. Its routes reward more than ordinary running and jumping. A tuft of grass may hide something to throw, an enemy can become a carried weapon, and a potion can open a temporary door into a hidden area. You choose from Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach, whose jumping and lifting abilities change how a section feels. Peach's brief float can help with gaps, while Toad remains effective when carrying things. Keep an eye on the life gauge and look for useful objects before tackling a crowded stretch. This is the Japanese Famicom game, not Doki Doki Panic or the later Game Boy Advance remake.
