Quick start
On the registration screen, choose a name of up to five katakana characters and a blood type, confirming each with A. Begin by talking to the editor and other people: approach them and press A. Move with Left/Right and press Down in front of doors to enter. Try a phone booth to transform when you have enough energy. Press START for the ability screen, choose a power with Up/Down, then press START again to return. B uses the selected power; SELECT opens the map.
Controls
Left/Right moves; Up jumps; Down enters buildings or descends underground. A punches, talks to nearby people and reads signs. B uses the selected power. START opens the status/ability screen and returns to play; Up/Down selects a power there. SELECT opens/closes the map. With Super Flight, A chooses a destination and START cancels. These are Japanese FC controls: A is not the jump button.
Superman — About this game
The Japanese Famicom version of Superman combines side-scrolling action with investigating incidents around New York. You begin as reporter Clark Kent at the Daily Planet, gathering information through conversations instead of simply fighting through every street. With enough life energy, a phone booth or changing room lets you become Superman. His selected powers help with combat and travel, but each has a supply to manage, and losing too much life forces you back into Clark's form. The map and ability screen are useful tools for deciding where to go and what to use next. Passwords obtained at the Daily Planet let you resume later. This entry describes that Japanese release rather than substituting details from the overseas NES localization or another Superman game.
