How to Play Sword Master

Quick start

Move cautiously to the right and treat the first enemies as timing lessons. Use B for a side strike, Up+B for an overhead swing and Down+B from a kneel for a low thrust; raise the shield with Up when an arrow or needle is approaching. Jump with A, and tap A again in sequence when a longer gap requires the extended jump. After gaining the mystic staff, press SELECT to put on the magic cloak, press START to open the spell choice and move Right to select one; press B to cast, or hold it for a stronger spell at a higher experience cost. Save magic for difficult encounters, collect healing potions quickly before they vanish and pause with START whenever you need to plan.

Controls

Left/Right moves the knight, Up raises the shield and Down kneels; narrow passages can be crossed while kneeling. A jumps, and consecutive presses extend a jump. B swings the sword: combine it with Left/Right for a side-arm swing, Up for an overhead swing or Down for a low forward thrust. START pauses. SELECT selects the magic cloak after it is obtained; while cloaked, START opens spell selection, Right cycles the spell and B casts it, with a held B producing a stronger version at greater experience cost.

Sword Master — About this game

Sword Master is a single-player NES action game built around measured duels rather than constant running. A knight crosses seven stages to defend the kingdom from the Fire Mage’s creatures, fighting ordinary monsters, mini-bosses and a boss at the end of each level. The sword can be aimed into side, overhead and low attacks, while raising the shield blocks arrows and other projectiles. Consecutive jump presses extend difficult leaps, and defeated enemies can leave healing potions or experience. After recovering the mystic staff, the hero can transform with the Cloak of Might and collect four magical symbols; spells consume experience, can be charged for greater power and expand the player’s choices against dangerous enemies. Careful spacing, guarding and choosing the correct attack height are more important than rushing.
