How to Play Swords and Serpents

Quick start

Advance past the title and credits with a button press on each screen. For a first run, choose one player with left/right and A, start a new game, then choose the existing party to begin with a balanced group. Up moves forward, down steps backward and left/right turn. When a character can act in combat, use A to attack or B to choose a spell. During exploration, START opens the save options; record all five passwords carefully.

Controls

Exploration: up/down move forward/backward; left/right turn 90 degrees. B opens spell selection. SELECT opens attributes/inventory outside combat; START reaches save options during exploration. Menus: D-pad selects, A confirms, B cancels. Combat: A attacks the body; up+A targets the head, down+A the legs, left/right+A the body. B selects magic; SELECT attempts to flee. These are mode-specific controls, not a universal START pause.

Swords and Serpents — About this game

Swords and Serpents puts a four-character party inside a maze of monsters, traps, shops and hidden routes. Warriors, thieves and magicians contribute different strengths, and at least one magician is needed to complete the quest. Explore from the party's viewpoint, record important junctions and seek the Ruby Warrior's artifacts before challenging the Serpent. Battles give different party members opportunities to act; targeted weapon attacks and spells help overcome enemy weaknesses. Gold buys equipment, while experience improves the party. Passwords preserve progress, but not every detail: the explored map and accumulated experience points are not retained, so keep your own notes rather than treating the codes as an exact snapshot.
