How to Play Ultimate Basketball

Quick start

Choose the one-player mode with up/down and A, then select a single game. Pick your team and opponent with left/right and A and complete the match settings. At tip-off, press B when the ball rises. Move with the D-pad and use A to pass to the marked teammate. To shoot, press B to jump, then press B again before landing. In a close-up with a shot meter, press B when the ball reaches its scoring zone.

Controls

D-pad: move the marked player or aim the inbounding/pass indicator. Offense: A passes or inbounds; B jumps, and another B press while airborne shoots. Defense: A blocks/changes to the player nearest the ball; B jumps to block or contest the tip-off. Close-up dunk/free throw: B at the meter's scoring zone. START pauses only while the ball is in play. Menus use the D-pad and A.

Ultimate Basketball — About this game

Taito Basketball is the Japanese Famicom release of the game known overseas as Ultimate Basketball. Control the player marked above his head, move the ball through passes and set up a shot before the defense closes in. The game offers solo play, two people cooperating on one team, competitive play and computer-controlled matches to watch. Seven teams bring different strengths to the court, while a single-game option lets you practice without entering the tournament. Shooting is a two-step action: jump first, then shoot while airborne. Dunk and free-throw close-ups add a timing meter, but three-point animations do not require an extra input. On defense, switch toward the ball, block jumping shots or stay close enough to attempt an automatic steal. Managing those changes of possession is as important as scoring.
